Overview

The Sr. Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the safety programs across all US and Mexico facilities. This role will ensure compliance with safety regulations, drive continuous improvement in safety culture, and implement initiatives that minimize workplace hazards, reduce accidents, and ensure the wellbeing of all employees. The Sr. Safety Manager will work closely with plant managers, health and safety teams, human resources and senior leadership to create and enforce safety policies, procedures, and training programs while aligning with both local and international regulatory standards.

 

Location: Must be willing to be onsite either at our facility in Joliet IL or York SC. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of safety programs across multiple manufacturing and distribution facilities in the US and Mexico.
  • Drives improvement in Safety culture and metrics by developing and implementing general safety policies and procedures.
  • Administers prevention programs for the reduction of repetitive stress injuries and general injuries.
  • Ensures compliance with all state, federal and local governmental EHS regulations. Includes but is not limited to written programs, record keeping, reports, inspections, monitoring, testing, training, and medical surveillance per guidelines.
  • Manages EHS programs including cost control/reduction and accident prevention/reduction.
  • Creates, implements and coordinates all Industrial Hygiene, Fire Prevention/Protection and Ergonomic programs. Includes all required training, record keeping, monitoring and reporting programs and results.
  • Ensures all EHS issues are identified during internal/external audit and Safety committee audits are resolved.
  • Provides support to and works with Human Resources Manager in the administration of Worker’s Compensation claims.
  • Development and maintenance of appropriate environmental and safety files; maintains required hazardous waste records; submits all necessary EPA and OSHA reports and environmental permit application.
  • Responsible for the handling, storage, removal and reduction of hazardous waste and documentation of all hazardous waste activities as well as facility inspection, inspection of storage areas, hazardous waste training and submission of reports.
  • Maintains an adequate library of safety and environmental reference materials and maintains current, updated Safety Data Sheets.
  • Builds and maintains chemical authorization process – including compliance, evaluation, training, and proper use.
  • Consults with engineers and maintenance personnel in the design and construction of equipment to ensure production equipment and tools are ergonomically compatible with employees' physical abilities to increase productivity.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents, injuries, and near misses, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and generate regular safety performance reports for senior management.
  • Develop and implement safety training programs for all levels of employees, including management, office staff, and frontline workers.
  • Implement safety orientations, refresher courses, and training on new equipment, processes, and regulatory updates.
  • Partner with plant leadership to identify safety risks and implement preventive measures across operations.
  • Act as a safety champion, driving engagement, fostering a safety-first culture, and ensuring buy-in at all levels of the organization.
  • Monitor and report key safety metrics and KPIs, using data to identify trends, areas for improvement, and benchmarks.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce incidents, improve safety behaviors, and enhance workplace conditions.
  • Oversee the development and execution and drills of emergency preparedness and response plans for each plant.
  • Provide support to both US and Mexico manufacturing sites to ensure alignment with company safety initiatives and compliance with local safety standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in safety management within a manufacturing or industrial setting, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience implementing and managing safety programs and EHS team across multiple locations, ideally including both the US and Mexico.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, Mexican STPS regulations, and other applicable safety laws.
  • Experience in leading safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Experience with Federal, state and local Worker’s Compensation law and prior experience establishing proactive Ergonomics Program.
  • Ability to travel between US and Mexico facilities approximately 40% of the time
  • Experience in LOTO process implementation
  • Experience in Hazard recognition and JSA creation
  • Case Management experience
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (ASP/CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certifications preferred.
  • Manufacturing experience is preferred
  • Training experience is preferred
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and best practices in manufacturing and industrial settings.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with diverse teams across geographical boundaries.
  • Proficient in safety data analysis and reporting tools.

 

Physical/Mental Demands:

The physical and mental requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

 

Working Environment:

Work is performed in an office as well as in a manufacturing environment.  The noise level in the office environment is usually moderately quiet, with frequent interruptions and multiple demands. The manufacturing work environment can be hot, and employees are often exposed to loud sounds and distracting noise levels.  Employees are exposed to hazardous equipment daily and are required to wear mandatory PPE while in the manufacturing environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an individual may encounter while performing the essential functions of this position.

 

  • Base Salary: $125,000 - $150,000 annually
