Overview

This position is responsible for leading and designing filtration-related products following the requirements agreed upon by the engineering manager and the customer.  The project engineer is responsible for the design as well as handling other responsibilities related to the delivery of the program tasks.  This will involve leading weekly customer meetings, handling all technical aspects of the project, tracking all engineering related open items, and working with cross-functional teams to ensure that the design meets Filtran quality and manufacturing standards.

 

The design must be optimized for performance, manufacturability (cost and quality) and must be conducted per ISO/TS 16949 requirements and in conformance to Filtran’ s Global Design Standards.  The Project Engineer is also responsible for engineering support which includes but not limited to ECO’s, BOM’s, TR’s CFD and FEA requests, updating MQ1 with design documentation, and advising other departments and customers in terms of design questions / inputs and any other support as directed.

 

The principal outputs of the project engineer position include both design and technical project management.  This position will generate 3D CAD models and drawings, all required technical APQP documentation as well as track notes from customer meetings, reviewing and updating technical specifications and lead cross functional team meetings to review technical aspects of the program.  This position will be working closely with other design engineers as well as Filtran’ s in house lab, quality, manufacturing, sourcing and project management departments.

Responsibilities

  1. Understand the fundamentals of Automotive Power Train and Filtration systems.
    1. Knowledge of automotive power train and filtration fundamentals acquired through seminars, training, and collaboration with colleagues and customers.
    2. Knowledge of power train filtration testing standards and procedures acquired and understood through training and education.

  2. Fulfill Project Design Requirements.
    1. Design collaboration with Filtran Global Design Teams Europe and China.
    2. Designs modeled in Creo and conform to Filtran’ s design standards and Creo best practices.
    3. Follow ISO/TS 16949 procedures throughout the design phase: DFMEA’s, BOM’s, DMR’s, and DVP’s (etc.) completed and delivered on-time to team members.
    4. Optimize product designs through FEA, CFD analysis and test results.
    5. Optimize product designs for manufacturability and quality at production quantities.
    6. Makes logically sound based design decisions and be able to explain that rational behind those decisions
    7. Meets promised due dates on deliverables such as designs, prints, technical reviews, TR’s and any other design responsibility requests
    8. Uploads and maintains APQP documentation in MQ1

  3. Generate production-ready models and drawings.
    1. CAD work exhibited a strong proficiency in Creo solids and surfacing.
      • Intelligent model/assembly setup with a skeleton model.
      • Simple sketches, draft before rounds, intelligent feature creation (no extraneous or unnecessary features), etc.
      • Proper “parent/child” relationships.
      • “No” geometry checks, no “sliver” surfaces, etc.
      • Use of surfacing where appropriate.
      • Ensure converted files do not require “healing the geometry”.
      • Robust modelling structure that allows for future design changes
    2. All released parts fully drafted and ready for tooling.

  4. Coordinate Program Development with Program Managers
  5. Participate in program managers meetings delivering on product design responsibility.
  6. Track and perform assigned tasks related to the program technical aspects

 

  1. Coordinate product testing with Filtran lab.
    1. Understand validation requirements, and the motive behind them.
    2. Provide lab with accurate DVP that reflects customer requirements and Filtran standards
    3. Provide lab with TR’s that are accurate and easy to understand what is being requested and the reason behind the request
    4. Design fixtures necessary for testing

  2. Technical Project Lead
    1. Participate in weekly customer meetings from a technical perspective
    2. Call and lead cross functional internal team meetings as project requires
    3. Track technical program open items and Keep meeting notes
    4. Provide technical support related to production validation as required.
    5. Follow up on technical open items with other departments to ensure that we are meeting customer expectations
  3. Support product innovation.
    1. Generate, capture and explore new design ideas for new products.
    2. Improve designs of existing products
    3. Provide technical support related to production validation as required.
    4. Support competitive benchmarking and IP protection of innovative ideas and concepts

Desired

BS in Mechanical Engineering.

 

A minimum of 2 years designing products to meet customer requirements for functionality, cost, and quality (manufacturability).

 

Understands engineering specifications and the tests required.  Experience optimizing designs based upon simulation and/or test results.

 

Meets commitment dates.

 

Familiar with automotive quality standards.

 

Experience in fulfilling the design requirements specified in the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) procedures, Gantt chart, DFMEA, drawing/design control, manufacturing review, etc.

 

Experience designing product using Creo.  Has an understanding of fundamental best practices: simple sketches, draft before rounds, intelligent feature creation, etc.)  Has an understanding of parent/child relationships and can avoid them.

 

Experience producing fully-drafted and rounded parts (parts where tooling is made directly from the solid model).  Parts must be without geometry checks or small "sliver" surfaces.

 

Experience with PPAP or similar process.

 

Proficient with MS Word, MS Excel (for engineering calculations) an PowerPoint (for presentation)

 

Excellent listening and good written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

 

Fluent in English (written and spoken).  Hands-on experience with cross-functional teams, group facilitation and problem solving.

 

Advanced Engineering Degree; good understanding of fluid dynamics with some CFD/FEA experience.

 

3 - 5 years hands-on project engineering experience in dealing with an automotive OEM or large Tier 1 suppliers to the automotive industry.  Experience with hydraulic or filtration-related products. 

 

Experience with manufacturing and assembly of filter components and assemblies.

 

3-5 years hands-on Research & Development engineering experience in filtration products.

 

Proficient conducting, or utilizing, FEA in the design process.  Familiar with CAD simulation software (SolidWorks Cosmos, Creo Advance Simulation) and or other engineering analysis software.

 

Experience with injection molding of engineered resins.  Experience with steel stampings.

 

Experience with production of similar product at volumes from 100,000 / year to 1,000,000 / year.

 

Knowledge of manufacturing processes and systems for filtration products

 

Proficient with Microsoft Project or some other means of project tracking.

 

Proficient with MS Project, MS PowerPoint, and MS Access.

 

Understand and converse in other languages (e.g. German, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and/or Korean).

 

Active in an engineering society/group where design developments are discussed (SAE, ASTM, ISO, etc.)

 

Inventor of US patents; experience developing novel products.

 

Experience directly interacting with customers.
