Overview

We are looking for an Advanced Materials Engineer to join our Materials Innovation team at the Porex Fairburn, GA facility. This position will focus on leading efforts in the development, characterization, and functionalization of sintered materials, membranes, and fiber-based components.

The role requires a deep technical understanding of material chemistry, resin behavior, and porous structure design. The ideal candidate will lead analytical assessments, develop technical data packages, and generate actionable insights that shape formulation strategies and product design. This individual will play a key role in transforming raw material capabilities into next-generation products for filtration, diagnostics, and life science applications.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of material screening, resin formulation, and analysis across a wide range of polymers and blends.
  • Lead advanced analytical characterization (e.g., SEM, DSC, TGA, FTIR, BET, surface energy, porosity, and flow analysis) to develop deep technical understanding of structure-property-performance relationships.
  • Drive the creation of comprehensive technical data packages, including protocols, raw data, interpretation, and recommendations.
  • Serve as a technical lead during product launch efforts, ensuring successful transition from development to production, including material readiness, documentation, and validation testing.
  • Translate data-driven insights into clear formulation strategies and material selection guidelines that support new product development.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to define material requirements, support scale-up trials, and ensure product manufacturability.
  • Act as the technical lead in cross-functional project teams, driving experimentation plans, risk assessments, and milestone reviews.
  • Identify opportunities for material innovation, including surface modifications, composite design, or alternative chemistries to enhance functionality (e.g., hydrophilicity, protein binding, chemical resistance).
  • Maintain awareness of emerging materials and processing technologies, proposing adoption of new capabilities where applicable.
  • Contribute to IP strategy, whitepapers, and technical support for customer engagements.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in advanced materials R&D, particularly with sintered plastics, membranes, and porous fiber technologies.
  • Proven track record in leading analytical and experimental material development efforts.
  • Experience supporting end-to-end product development, including design transfer, manufacturing scale-up, and product launch.
  • Expertise in polymer resin compounding, surface chemistry, and structure-property analysis.
  • Skilled in use and interpretation of characterization tools such as SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, contact angle, and pore size distribution.
  • Strong analytical thinker with the ability to generate hypotheses, design experiments, extract and document meaningful conclusions.
  • Effective communicator and team collaborator, able to bridge technical detail with commercial application.
  • Experience with regulated markets (e.g., medical, diagnostics, pharma) and familiarity with bio-compatibility and extractables & leachables testing.
